What If You’re Your Own Product?
A product is any item or service you sell to serve a customer’s need or want. — aha.io
(For the purpose of this article, a “product” is a “tech product”)
A product mindset helps you view yourself from a third person’s perspective and approach yourself without judgment. You will be more likely to be open to feedback as constructive criticism where you can grow. This will allow you to ask yourself questions that you might not ask yourself otherwise. It allows you to find opportunities, make mistakes, learn, and even get feedback from people who matter, test and repeat.
Why though? For a product to be viable and successful, there are so many boxes that you need to check other than just a beautiful design and a clean code — these are sales & marketing, branding, business model, customers etc. The same goes for us as social beings where we’re interacting with other humans on a daily basis (just like a product!). When we want to achieve goals that are not yet defined by the stereotypes, we gotta check all of those boxes — these include personal branding, hardcore fans who love your quality work, finances etc. This is why I love viewing myself as a product so that I can approach my own areas for improvement with humility and openness.
I personally think this mindset allows us to develop more grit, and help identify and let go of things that have lesser significance in our lives. And most importantly, be the product that serves our inner selves! So I suggest you, give it a try for a week, think of yourself as a product, experiment with it and let me know how it went! :)
